Sri Lankan citizens living in Italy will soon be able to convert their Sri Lankan driving license into an Italian driving license under a renewed bilateral agreement between Italy and Sri Lanka.
The agreement was officially signed on 12 December 2025 in Rome and allows eligible residents to convert their driving licenses without taking the Italian driving theory or practical exams.
According to the official announcement from the Sri Lankan Embassy in Italy, applications for license conversion will start from 10 April 2026.

📅 When Applications Start
- Agreement effective: 10 April 2026
- Applications accepted from: 10 April 2026 onwards
- Priority service: Thursdays at the Sri Lankan Embassy in Rome
Applicants must visit the embassy in person to submit the application.
👤 Who Is Eligible
You can apply if:
✅ You are legally living in Italy
✅ You have lived in Italy less than 6 years on 10 April 2026
✅ Your Sri Lankan driving license was issued before obtaining legal residency in Italy
🚫 Who Is Not Eligible
❌ If you have lived in Italy more than 6 years on 10 April 2026, you cannot apply under this agreement.

➡ You can apply before 01 May 2026
📍 Example 2
If your first residency in Italy was on 01 May 2018
➡ You cannot apply because the 6-year limit has already passed
This rule comes directly from the Italy–Sri Lanka driving license recognition agreement.

Applicants must prepare the following documents:
1️⃣ Sri Lankan Passport
- Original passport
- Copies of pages 2, 3, 4 and 5
2️⃣ Sri Lankan Driving License
- Original driving license
- 2 enlarged photocopies (both sides printed on the same page)
3️⃣ Italian Residence Permit
(Permesso di Soggiorno)
- Original document
- 1 copy (front and back)
4️⃣ Italian Identity Card
(Carta d’Identità)
- Original document
- 1 copy (front and back)
5️⃣ Historical Residence Certificate
(Certificato Storico di Residenza)
This document must clearly show the date of migration from Sri Lanka to Italy.
6️⃣ Birth Certificate (only if needed)
Required only if there is any difference between passport details and driving license details.
🏛️ Application Process
The conversion procedure consists of two main steps.
Step 1 — Embassy Verification
Applicants must submit documents at the Sri Lankan Embassy in Rome.
The embassy will verify the authenticity of the driving license with the Department of Motor Traffic in Sri Lanka.
Step 2 — Apply in Italy
Once the embassy verification is completed, applicants can apply for the conversion through:
- Motorizzazione Civile
- ACI – Automobile Club Italia
- Driving Schools (Autoscuola)
After approval, the applicant will receive an Italian driving license.

- Emilia-Romagna
⚠ However, the Certificate of Authenticity is issued only by the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Rome.

- Third-party applications are not accepted
- The embassy must verify the Sri Lankan driving license before conversion
